My Story

Hi there! I'm Ben Hannam, a graphic designer in Chapel Hill, NC. Welcome to my site—a peek into my journey, passions, and experiences. I love designing, teaching, and writing, and I'm excited to share my work with you.

Background and education

I have an MFA in Visual Communication from VCU and a BFA in Graphic Design from Old Dominion University. I've taught graphic design at VCU (both in Richmond, VA, and Doha, Qatar) and Virginia Tech. Now, I'm an Associate Professor and chair of the Communication Design program at Elon University.

passions and interests

I love exploring new things and consider myself a lifelong learner. Right now, I'm learning to brew my own beer, delving into the blend of graphic design and generative AI, and working on my third graphic design book.

FUN FACTS

  • One of my design solutions went viral after my political stamps were featured on BoingBoing.net, and I suddenly started getting orders from all over the world!
  • I have a signed, first edition of Stefan Sagmeister's "Made You Look" with an uncracked red cover. Sagmeister called me "Lovely Ben" when he signed it, which still makes me chuckle!
